  • The EU Bans TPO in Nail Gels: What Beauty Professionals Need to Know

On  September 1, 2025 , the European Union officially banned the use of TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide)  in cosmetic products, including gel nail systems. This regulatory move follows growing scientific evidence identifying TPO as a reproductive toxicant , raising serious concerns about its long-term health effects. This decision has immediate implications for nail professionals, salon owners, and distributors—both within and outside the EU. What Is TPO and Why Was It Banned? TPO is a photoinitiator commonly used in gel nail products to help harden or "cure" the gel under UV or LED light. While effective in performance, TPO has been flagged by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) for its potential to cause harm to reproductive health. As a result, the EU has taken decisive action to eliminate its use in cosmetic formulations. What the Ban Means for the Industry The EU’s ban on TPO is not a phased rollout—it is immediate and absolute . This means: No salon or supplier within the EU  may sell or use gel products containing TPO. No grace period  has been granted. Any remaining inventory must be removed from shelves and discontinued immediately. Outside the EU , TPO-containing gels may still be legally sold and used. However, professionals and clients alike are encouraged to make informed decisions based on safety and transparency. Why This Matters to Canadian and North American Professionals Even though this regulation is specific to the European Union, it sets a precedent that resonates globally. Beauty professionals in Canada and North America are increasingly prioritizing cleaner, safer formulations —not just for regulatory compliance, but for the health and trust of their clients. As awareness grows, clients are asking more questions about the ingredients in their nail products. Being proactive about ingredient safety is no longer optional—it's a competitive advantage. • Does Fibrique Express Repair require a bonding agent?

No, Fibrique Express Repair does not require a bonding agent, as it already contains 50% bonding properties. It is not necessary to use any LCN bonding agents  prior to using Fibrique Express Repair, as this would cause the Fibrique to slide off the nail and will cause lifting issues.  It is also important to gently stir Fibrique Express Repair before application as the bonding agent in this product tends to float to the top, and the fibers tend to sink to the bottom of the jar.  Recommended use on normal to hard nails and best used for thin overlays and repairs due to its minimal flexibility.

  • What products do you recommend putting on a hair stylist?

You can apply any of the LCN Building products, but to improve adhesion of the building products, apply Connex Silver Plus as a first step. This will help control the moisture level in the natural nail.

  • Do I have to use a bonding agent with One Component Resins?

It is recommended that a Bonder be applied prior to the application of all One Component Resins.  A filler is added to these resins to achieve a higher (thicker) viscosity.  When applying One Component Resin to build the artificial nail there will be places on the nail plate that will be in direct contact to the filler and not the gel resin, therefore there wouldn't be proper adhesion in these areas.  Using a bonding agent first will prevent any lifting issues from the filler.

  • What is Bondique made up of?

Bondique is as self-leveling one step system for creating artificial gel nails, composed of 50% Bonder, 25% Builder, and 25% Sealer

  • I have heard that you can use Connex prior to sealing the nail?

Yes, you can apply Connex prior to sealing the nail to prevent hairline lifting, and to help the Sealant to adhere to the natural nail better.  Apply Connex around the cuticle edge after filing the nail into shape, then apply and cure Sealant.  It is important to apply the Connex just to the perimeter of the nail plate where the natural nail is exposed after filing, allow very little to touch the building gel.

  • Why does Recolution Permanent Gel Polish sometimes wrinkle and shrink when I cure it?

Recolution Permanent Gel Polish may wrinkle or shrink back on the nail plate if too much product was applied in each application, and/or it was not cured for the full time after each coat. LCN tunnel light and LCN LED light units have different curing times.  Recolution polish must be applied in two thin coats, the first coat will almost appear sheer or translucent, the second coat will give it the full coverage. Be sure to cure for the full time required on each light unit after each coat. Tech Tip:  use the continuous timer function on your light unit, to eliminate any issues with the light unit turning off just as your client puts her hand into the light unit.

  • What is the purpose of adding solvents to nail products?

Solvents not only make the polish viscosity thinner, and sometimes easier to apply, but it also speeds up the drying process.  Solvents also make regular nail polish and permanent gel polish thicken and become difficult to work with, this happens every time the lid is off the polish bottle as the solvents evaporate.  To make the polish workable again a nail polish thinner needs to be added to the thickened product.
